Einstein’s family were non-practicing Jews and they moved to Munich when his father set
up an electrical business there. His mother was a talented musician and Einstein was
encouraged to learn the violin from a young age. At the age of five his father showed him
a pocket compass and the realisation that something unseen was making the needle
difficulties, he was a top student at school. However, he was unhappy with traditional
learning methods and undertook much personal study outside of school. Einstein showed
an early talent for mathematics, calculus and science.
Einstein’s father wanted him to become an electrical engineer but when he was aged 15
the family moved to Italy after his father's business failed. Soon after the move, Einstein
wrote his first scientific work connected with magnetic fields and in the same year (aged
16) he performed his first experiment. Despite his obvious talents, he failed the entrance
exam for the Institute of Technology in Zurich.
At the suggestion of the principal, he moved to Switzerland and lodged with a family there
to enable him to finish secondary school. He graduated aged 17 and was finally able to
enrol at the Institute of Technology. Mileva Maric enrolled at the Institute in 1896 as the
only woman studying mathematics. Einstein was a handsome romantic and over the next
few years their friendship developed into romance. They had an illegitimate daughter in
1902 and Einstein’s family were against them marrying as she was beneath their social
class. It is not known if the child was adopted or died in infancy. However, once Einstein
secured a job at the patent office in 1903 they were able to marry. They had two sons but
divorced in 1919. Einstein’s second wife was his divorced cousin, Elsa. She was more able
to cope with his attraction for the ladies.
In 1905 (aged 26) Einstein published four groundbreaking scientific papers. These
included his special theory of relativity and his equation E = mc2 which related mass and
energy. In the same year he was awarded a PhD by the University of Zurich. Einstein's
work was becoming recognised as original and important and in 1909 he became
Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at Zurich. In 1911 he became Professor of
Theoretical Physics at the German University in Prague and in 1914 he was appointed
director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics in Berlin. That year he became a
German citizen. In 1916 (aged 37) he published his theory of general relativity. In 1921
(aged 42) Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in the field of
theoretical physics.
Einstein lectured in Europe, North and South America and Palestine and was involved in
the establishment of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1933 the Nazis took power in
Germany and so Einstein emigrated to America. He accepted a position at the Institute of
Advanced Study in Princeton and took US citizenship. He retired in 1945 (aged 66) but
worked for the rest of his life towards a theory that would establish a merger between
quantum theory and his general theory of relativity.
He was active in the peace movement and campaigned for a ban on nuclear weapons. For
his support of Zionist causes, he was offered the presidency of Israel in 1952, which he
declined. Although he did not believe in a personal god, he was deeply religious and could
see the important relationship between religion and science.
Einstein died on 18th April 1955 (aged 76) in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. The cause of
death was a ruptured aortic aneurism. Einstein’s brain was removed and preserved for
future research into what had made him so intelligent.
